I love the explanatory notes on my Life Application Bible. I'm reading Matt 26. See the explanation of verse 69-74
Just in case the picture is too small for you to see the words. This is what it says: "There are three stages to Peter's denial. First, he acted confused and tried to divert attention from himself by changing the subject. Second, using an oath he denied that he knew Jesus. Third, he swore that he did not know Jesus. Believers who deny Christ often do so subtly by pretending not to know him. When opportunities to discuss religious issues come up, they walk away or pretend they don't know the answers. With only a little more pressure, they can be induced to deny flatly their relationship with Christ. If you find yourself subtly diverting conversation so you don't have to talk about Christ, watch out. You may be on the road to denying him."
Aren't we all guilty of this? I find that a lot of times I'm careful of evangelizing to people for either fear of being portrayed as acting too holy or fear of being accused of imposing my religion on others. This is a form of denying Jesus and a call for change for me! May God help us all. Amen.
